Ruby Behind The Screens
The classes at Ruby Institute are very different during the pandemic. Students are allowed to study from home. This means that everything will be done online, including orientation, classes, assessments, and any required exercises. Let us discover what Ruby Behind the Screen is like!
This is the test for any GE student or VET student who did not provide evidence of relevant English proficiency. Our admission team will send out the placement test with the Letter of Offer. Students are required to complete the placement test before the Wednesday of the week before the class starts. This is so that they can be allocated to their relevant level.
Please note that students who fail to do so will be marked as absent in class until they provide the completed placement test.
Orientation
Students will receive an orientation pack on the Wednesday of the week before their course starts. If they apply close to the course start date, they will receive the orientation email one day after the first fee payment is made.
The orientation email includes the following information and it is very important to read through it attentively.
- Student Handbook
- Timetable
- Refund Calculation Table
- How to Create Your USI (VET students only)
- Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) Assessment* (VET students only)
- Student ID (Temporary Digital Copy)
*VET Students are required to submit their LLN assessment by the course start date.
Books (GE students)
GE students need physical books in class even though the class is online. Once the student’s level is confirmed, the student will receive a text message regarding book delivery. Ruby staff will deliver the books to the student’s place or residence. However, the student may request an option to meet in another place for them to pick up the book.
**If the book cannot be delivered for any reason (travel restrictions or student’s location is beyond a reasonable distance), the student will be given the access to a digital copy through our online learning platform – aNewSpring until we return to the campus.
Books (VET students)
There is no physical book for VET students. They can access all the learning material through our online learning platform – aNewSpring. Students will receive an email with their login details before the course starts.
Classes
Our classes are being delivered through Zoom. Students will receive an email from student services on their class days before the class starts. For example, English classes are being delivered on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students will receive an email each morning with a link that gives them access to the class. The same rule applies to VET students for the relevant class days for their course.
If there is any unexpected problem such as the teacher’s internet being down or any other issue preventing Zoom access, students will be notified on the day, in the morning, and the class will be rescheduled to another time.
Student Services
Ruby students have several ways to contact Student Services
- Email – studentservices@ruby.vic.edu.au
- Phone – only Ruby students have the access
- Zoom – by appointment only
Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm
Graduation
Students will have the graduation in class through Zoom and teachers will have a small celebration speech. Student Services will send out a digital certificate to students who have graduated. This enables them to continue their journey. Physical certificates will only be available after we are back to campus.
We hope you now have a better idea of what is happening at Ruby during the pandemic. We hope to go back to campus sometime soon but, meanwhile, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or by phone. We are here to assist.
